What Our Students Say

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. What may change for you is that you might ‘culture’ or round the vowel sound in line with the style of what you do. But remember this, the scales themselves are not the important thing. The notes themselves don’t give you the result it’s what you do on the scales that matters most.Â
It’s not for me to comment on what other people are doing. What I do know is that I have researched and studied the effect of these exercises and have seen them help in the vast majority of cases. My track record of success speaks for itself.Â
The most honest answer is a lack or preparedness to really follow though and be truly committed, however I am going to assume that this is NOT you!. The next most common reason that people don’t practice consistently is a lack of understanding about what they need to do and why they need to do it. It is possible that this is not the first program on singing that you have attempted. If it is, then I say welcome and invite you to follow my instructions and build slowly. Most people that I have worked with have already had some form of tuition and have perhaps even been to several different teachers. Whilst they have exercises and the convenience of doing them, they don’t do them because quite simply, they don’t understand why. Another crucial difference is that people have their practice (or discovery time as we call it) as a ‘should’ instead of a ‘must’. Right there is the difference. When you make something a ‘must’ it WILL happen.
No. In this day and age with greater access to programs and tips it is vital that you have the correct information and guidance that includes an experienced team of professionals that can provide appropriate feedback and advice that will assist you to achieve what you have set out to do. As a teacher of more than 30 years experience it has been my close observation that most discoveries of voice take place outside of the lesson environment when the singer least expects it. This is not due to any ‘luck’ but more so because they have been steered in the correct direction and have been following up diligently. What is essential is that you spend time with your voice discovering, and you find some people or peers that can provide you with good feedback as to how your development is. We don’t advise relying on your own judgement entirely, especially if you are inexperienced. That is where our feedback mentoring system is so effective. I will provide you with the professional advice that you need, based on your video submissions.
Yes it is true. With that being said just singing the same things over and over that aren’t working, and hoping that they may suddenly start working for you is quite futile. Once you start to develop successful coordination ( from our vocal exercises), you will find the development of your voice compounding in a healthy manner. One of the big problems in trying to rush the development of a voice is the need to get instant results. It’s like standing in front of a flower and demanding that it grow quicker, it grows by being nurtured.  At VOCAL MASTERY I believe in fast tracking the process of vocal development without cheating you of all the essential ingredients required.Â
Yes, of course. I have trained singers as young as 11 and 12 years of age who are required to perform numerous shows per weeks well as absolute newbees. The most important thing in voice training is to not take any exercise higher or lower than is comfortable, and not to try and make the sound too big too soon. This is the number one cause of fatigue in a voice.  It is what is done on the exercise that makes a difference and how you transition that feeling and control into how you sing. In other words when you begin to perform songs, don’t start yelling.
At VOCAL MASTERY I work with a wide variety of singers, however the greater majority of people who make a living in singing perform in popular areas i.e. Pop, Jazz,  & Musical Theatre. I have personally trained singers that perform hard rock, pop, rap as well as a great many in foreign languages (to me). The truth is that you can apply these exercises in to any style of singing that you wish to sing. Remember that just being able to stylise isn’t sufficient – you must have muscular control over your voice in order to facilitate style.
Some people have the constitution of a bull. The question is if they followed a healthier regime would they in fact have a better voice? The truth is that you are not your friend. If you have tried to emulate their behaviour and it hasn’t worked for you, then you already have your answer.Â
